Breaking The Low-Carb Code

With all the rage on low carbohydrate diet nowadays, it's easy to get trapped on a web of confusing information and claims. From South Beach Diet, the Zone Diet and Atkins Diet, the low-carb craze has taken the market by storm. The right information is essential to achieve an effective weight loss if you really want to embark on this craze.

Supporters of this kind diet claim that it can help you reduce not only a few pounds but even more and help you achieve the body that you desire. They say it prevents medical conditions associated with high carbohydrate intake like diabetes and obesity. Detractors on the other hand attribute mineral imbalances due to the lack of fiber and essential vitamins and minerals. They say the lack of workout and increased protein and fat intake can potentiate heart and kidney ailments.

Low carb diet or high carb diet can cause changes in our body that will lead to a weight loss of some sort according to research. But the question is, can we achieve a permanent weight loss from these diets? Research reveals that decreasing total carbohydrate intake means a significant increase in both protein and fat. The Atkins diet restricts carbohydrate to only about 100 grams per day while the Zone and South Beach diet is less restrictive. This doesn’t mean though that we can devour all the red meat that we want. Most studies suggest though that for one to lose weight, he must cut calories and decrease portion sizes for long-term period not just simply restricting carbohydrates. Little evidence on the adverse effects of low-carb diet are available since most studies are of short duration. But strict restriction on carbohydrates can produce ketosis which cause harmful metabolic state. In the long run, the restriction may eventually cause boredom and noncompliance to diet.

Low carbohydrate or not, the important thing is to know the pros and cons. Do some research and talk to the right people.
